Welcome to the first of many posts of the best New Jersey & New York eats from Andy's Food & Restaurant Reviews. The first place I am bringing you to is CARS: Sandwiches & Shakes which is a popular sandwich and shake shop located in Montclair and Ramsey, New Jersey. Last year, I temporarily worked as a delivery driver for Postmates for a few months and one of my deliveries was from CARS, which was how I found this joint in the first place. Once I did, I knew I had to see what the hype was all about. CARS is mostly known for their fat sandwiches. Fat sandwiches are mostly a New Jersey staple and can be found in New York as well. Usually cheeseburgers, cheesesteaks, fries, mozzarella sticks, tater tots, chicken tenders, etc. are some of the key foods you would find in a fat sandwich. Although fat sandwiches may be a bit unhealthy, you would be surprised by how piling on a bunch of food together in one bite actually tastes really well and how all the flavors can compliment each other.
The options to order at from CARS are just endless as they have so many incredible subs that make it difficult to decided which one you want. I have been here now a dozen of times and you know I already have some personal favorites of my own. One of them is ‘The Fat Doug’ which has chicken tenders, fries, onion rings, mozzarella sticks and honey mustard. ‘The Fat Gerald’ is another personal preference for me. The only difference between ‘The Fat Doug’ and ‘The Fat Gerald’ is instead of honey mustard they use honey barbeque sauce. Another favorite of mine is ‘The Fat Otto’ which is chicken tenders, bacon, onion rings, mozzarella sticks, fries and chipotle mayo. And of course I saved the best for last and my overall favorite which is ‘The Fat Arthur,’ it has meatballs, mac bites, mozzarella sticks, fries and marinara sauce.
They have a bunch of awesome sides you can also order too. Whatever you choose to order, the mac bites are definitely something you have to get! They are the best I have ever had and go perfectly with their marinara sauce. You could also get the mac bites with bacon too. I have also had their onion rings before which are really good. When you order, you are allowed to choose any two sauces they provide and trust me there is a lot! The other sides you can order are mozzarella sticks, fried raviolis and fried pickle spears, just to name a few. They also have tater tots, regular, waffle and sweet potato fries and there's also the option of choosing cheese or bacon with your fries too. CARS also has burgers, cheesesteaks, wings and chicken sandwiches if you do not feel like having a fat sandwich. They even offer milkshakes with a whole lot of unbelievable flavors you can order as well.
Now I've only been to their Montclair location, so I'm not sure if this is the case with their Ramsey one too, but CARS only offers takeout or delivery. So unfortunately, you can not eat in-person, but the food and service is still amazing and this place is definitely worth the try!
